Instead of drinking soda and other sugared drinks to cool off, I’ve been drinking tons of “sassy water.” This healthy substitute is filtered water with lemon and wild orange essential oils and a dash of stevia. It’s sooooo good! I’ve especially been grateful for it while getting over a sinus infection this past week.

This is a glass pitcher with lid that holds 2 quarts (2 liters to be exact) and I just keep it on the counter or in the fridge with sassy water all the time. The kids love it too. They are always drinking mine! I have to make a new batch once or twice a day.
This wonderful water has these benefits for me:
- Tastes great, so soda or sugar drinks are not tempting to me
- Gives my throat that quenched, well lubricated feeling
- Gives me energy
- Enhances my mood
- Helps diminish hay fever symptoms
- Improves my digestion
- Strengthens my immunity
- Acts as a gentle expectorant for mucus in my throat
- Even helps prevent cancer (believe it or not)
Now you know why I drink this ALL THE TIME!
I don’t think I need to review all the reasons why soda, especially diet varieties, are so bad for our bodies. If you have any questions about that, just visit Dr. Mercola’s website. He’ll give you an earful.
Essential Oil Sassy Water Recipe
2 quarts pure water
15 drops lemon essential oil
15 drops wild orange essential oil
heaping 1/4 tsp of Pure Stevia Extract Powder
I usually sprinkle in the stevia first and add the oils as I’m filling up the pitcher. This way it stirs itself. Some of the oils rise to the top, but the flavor goes through all the water. I keep the container covered so the oils don’t evaporate off. This keeps the flavor strong.
I try to always keep my sassy water in glass or stainless steel containers, since essential oils break down plastic. I’ve used plastic straws for awhile, but I’m finally upgrading to glass straws from Glass Dharma. I just need a couple 9″ ones to put in the quart canning jars I drink out from. I LOVE them.
I’ve tried different brands of essential oils and stevia. After using Doterra essential oils and KAL brand Pure Stevia Extract, I’ll never go back.
With membership, the lemon and wild orange cost $10 per bottle. This is worth it to me and makes many servings, especially because it’s good sickness prevention. I won’t have to spend as much on remedies later.
And that’s what doing-it-yourself health is all about!
So Say No to Soda!
Please tell us what healthy drinks you drink and serve your family?
Update 8/29/11-It is good to stir your mixture well, because as I mentioned, the oils tend to float on the top of the water. So if you or your child drinks the water without a straw, you may feel the skin around your mouth tingling. If this happens, just rub a little olive oil or other oil on the skin to stop it. I use straws mostly so I never notice that, but my kids have mentioned it a couple times.

I’m going to be making this – it sounds delicious; and who can beat the benefits?! THANKS for sharing!
You’re so welcome, Barbara!
My girls love this and call it “lemonade”! It’s absolutely perfect for my diabetic daughter too! I first made it last Friday and took it with me to a Zumba class. Between the girls and I, we finished off my huge 2 qt jug in that hour! I haven’t really enjoyed the lemon oil by itself in water (I had previously been using TrueLemon packets of powder), but I can drink it much better this way. Might have to check out the straws too.
Great Debra!! So glad you’re enjoying this!
Jenni – what is the difference between the doTERRA Slim and Sassy oil the the Lemon & Wild Orange you use to make your Sassy drink?
Slim & Sassy contains peppermint, ginger & cinnamon along with lemon & grapefruit. That combination is great for metabolism, but it’s hard for me to guzzle. I would take it in capsule if I needed it daily
I do a slight variation and make my own “Fresca” by using (only doterra of course) grapefruit and lime oil. I haven’t sweetened it yet though so I’m definitely adding the stevia to try.
I do like to change up my citruses occasionally. I have tried this combination and it’s really good too. Sweetened, it’s even better! Thanks for your comment Valorie!
Your recipe says pure water. In your opinion what do you think is the best kind to use.
I am so thrilled I found your site. Looking forward to testing this one out with my kids.
Good question! Anything that gets the majority of the chlorine, inorganic minerals and other possible contaminants out. We use reverse osmosis. Even a Brita counter filter is better than nothing and makes a huge difference in taste.
So glad you like my site. Thanks for reading!
Jenni,
Do you know which filters remove fluoride? I am trying to find a filter that removes all the things you mentioned above and fluoride. Thanks in advance!
You’ll have to research individual brands for that information. We invested in a whole house system with R/O from a company called Hague. They are high quality, but a bit pricey. Good luck!
Jenni, thank you so much for all you do! You are a great inspiration to me.
Our favorite drink du jour has been vinegar water. It’s one teaspoon Bragg’s Cider Vinegar and 1 packet of Truvia to 1 cup of pure water. Do try it — my teenagers are hooked on it! Very alkalinizing, and a pleasant tang.
We just tried it with Sweet Leaf Stevia, which is a mild stevia, and it is very good! It’s good for you too! Dr. Christopher taught that everyone should drink a little unfiltered apple cider vinegar every day. I’m glad your teens are hooked on something healthy and that you get some inspiration from my site. Thanks for your comment!
