Preparing Your Pregnancy Against Miscarriage

This is Emili, Jenni’s younger sister.  You might have read in one of my previous posts where I mentioned that my first pregnancy ended in a miscarriage.  After successfully having 3 more pregnancies and 3 more children, I recently became pregnant again late last year.  This time I had some complications and began spotting around 9 weeks.

  1. Leah Spencer says:

A good, and somewhat timely post for me. I recently discovered that I’m pregnant again (4th time, have 1 child) and I’m still nursing my 13 month old son. And by nursing, I mean all the time, upwards to a dozen times a day.

The biggest toll I’m experiencing is almost daily cramping when I’m nursing. I’ve also been spotting more than any of my previous 3 pregnancies. I know it’s just the nipple stimulation encouraging my uterus to tighten (it’s how I got my labor to start with my son), but I’d also like some ideas how I can discourage the cramping.

I’m drinking a gallon or more water everyday. I have dark leafy greens daily, along with liquid chlorophyll. I aim for protein with every meal. I’m staying away from essential oils like clary sage and basil.

I would love to glean ideas to make nursing and pregnancy successful. :)

    • Jenni @ Mom Essentials says:

You may need more magnesium and calcium. When babies are growing, their brains grow exponentially and this takes lots of these minerals from YOU. A good prenatal vitamin is essential. You could definitely take some of Vickie’s Cramp Relief, which has helped me tons.

  2. Lisa says:

    Hi Emili!!
I’m so happy to Hear that your pregnant with your 4th child. I enjoyed your story and absolutely love your big sis” Jenni’s site!
Best wishes Emili to you and your family on your wonderful news!
    Lisa & Family!

  3. Michelle the Midwife says:

First of all, congratulations on your pregnancy! You’re so lucky to be adding to your beautiful family!
Please know for you and your sister that a miscarriage is something that happens naturally, it was absolutely NOTHING you did or didn’t do to cause it. There is also NOTHING you can do to prevent it, either. I would never, ever want a woman to feel a miscarriage was due to something she did, or thought, or felt, or didn’t do, think, or feel. Unless it’s very special circumstances (illegal drug use, direct trauma to the abdomen, etc) there was absolutely nothing you could have done to prevent it. Only 1 out of 4 pregnancies actually make it to full term.
For you, your sister, and anyone who is reading this who has had a miscarriage, there was nothing you could have done to change it! The best you can do is live has healthy as you can, exercise, and take your prenatal vitamins.
    God Bless!

    • Jenni @ Mom Essentials says:

      Hi Michelle,
Thank you for sharing your point of view on this topic. I believe it does no good to beat ourselves up when things go wrong and our bodies don’t function as we would like them to. However, instead of feeling helpless and hopeless when things continue to go wrong, we can be empowered by understanding that tools do exist that can nourish, heal and strengthen our body systems to lessen or prevent problems from happening again.

There are natural laws at work and “cause & effect” does take place in our bodies. When things don’t go right, usually it’s because that system needs some cleansing or some nourishing, and natural tools exist to accomplish this in each system of our bodies. Herbs, essential oils and even whole foods have been used for thousands of years for this purpose. There ARE things we can do to help our bodies function correctly. We just need to put in the time and effort to learn what those things are and put them into practice to help ourselves. I believe Dr. Christopher is one of the best sources of information on this topic.

Instead of just hoping problems won’t happen again, we can allow problems to motivate us to proactively seek for ways we can improve our lifestyle and increase our chances for healthy outcomes. In my opinion, this view gives hope.

      • Camille (Midwife) says:

Sounds good to me!! I know that in some instances, miscarriage is not preventable. But there are a significant amount of pregnancies that could be saved through proper nutrition and alternative therapies to balance hormones and create an optimal environment for a fetus. :)

  4. Sandi says:

Where can we get FemEase? Thanks so much!

  5. aloha says:

I too lost a baby at 12wks. After having my twins we decided to try for another one and at 12wks i started to cramp up and eventually miscarriage. I was devastated, feeling like it was all my fault and i could’ve prevented it by being more healthy. I realize now that miscarriages happen and although it was a hard time, i had to count my blessings. Two months later we tried again and i was able to give birth to a healthy baby girl, she is now almost two and we really want more kids we been trying for two months. Im hoping my ovaries are ok, i have pain in right ovaries during my menstruation. What would u recommend. I saw that your company has vitamins. should i take that….

    • Jenni @ Mom Essentials says:

I’m sorry, but glad to hear you had a healthy baby girl. Again, the supplement pack is excellent for overall nutrition and healing support. I would still recommend that you take Vickie’s FemEase to nourish and strengthen the reproductive system and balance the hormones. You’ll want to take this through your fourth month of pregnancy. I strongly recommend that you do a phone consultation with Vickie also. She will know what else could help you.

  6. aloha says:

Thank u i will try to get a phone consultation with vicki.

  7. Jamie Vulei says:

That’s true. Once you take evening primrose oil pregnancy supplements, your body manufactures this type of cervix mucus that strengthens the lining of your cervix and paves the way for sperm survival. It helps the sperm survive in your uterus thus, increasing the chances for you to get pregnant.

    • Jenni @ Mom Essentials says:

I appreciate your comment Jamie! I know these natural tools work, but sometimes I don’t know exactly how they work. Thanks for giving us more information!

  8. Jessica says:

I just miscarried at 13 weeks (I do have a healthy 2year old). It was a shock and very hard for me, as I will be 37 soon and want at least one more baby. It’s been 6 weeks since my D&C and I think I am already having a second period (1st one came back at around 4 weeks, with 5 days of spotting prior). I have been spotting on and off and just don’t feel normal. I have been doing red rasp. leaf daily along with liver supporting herbs. I really want to try soon for another baby, but I guess my body needs more time to heal. Do you have any other thoughts for what I can take to help my cycles normalize again? Prior to my miscarriage, my cycles were every 25-26 days, lasting 3 days, lightish bleeding and they were like this when I got pregnant with my son. I like your evening primrose oil suggestion and will start that right away.

    • Jenni @ Mom Essentials says:

I’m so sorry to hear that! Yes, you should have had a bit more bleeding for a few more days in a normal cycle. You can nourish and strengthen your system for next time. You are definitely not too old to have a healthy pregnancy! Red raspberry leaf and evening primrose are awesome. Keep taking those. I would also take a blend of herbs that help balance the hormones, regulate cycle and nourish the reproductive system even more. I highly recommend Vickie’s FemEase (on my store under Vickie’s Capsulated Formulas), to help with all these things. I would also take wheat germ oil as well. I have that in capsules under Dr. Christopher. Eat plenty of raw foods and greens. Drink a green smoothie everyday if you can. This will give you powerful nutrition for healing and help your body prepare to nourish another baby. Good luck!

  9. Sarah says:

I am currently going through my first miscarriage at 6 weeks pregnant. Also my first pregnancy. I’m completely devastated and so scared to try again. I’m not sure my heart can take another miscarriage but at the same time I’m desperate to conceive again and hoping it will be as fast as last time (conceived after one month). I’ve ordered all of the supplement’s you’ve suggested. My question is how long do take the super primrose? I’ve understand you need to ween yourself down from the vitex by the end of your first trimester should I do that with the fem ease also? Anything you can suggest would help me tons. Thank you so much.

    • Jenni @ Mom Essentials says:

Hi Sarah, I talked with Camille Wilcox today, daughter of Vickie Sorensen and she said you can take FemEase & Evening Primose all through the first trimester and beyond. Primrose is a hormone precursor. Lost of miscarriages occur between 10-12 weeks because mom’s body is trying to transfer progesterone to placenta, and it can’t handle it. Estrogen levels need to be low and progesterone needs to be higher. Evening primrose oil has high omegas which is good for the brain development of the fetus. It can be taken through 14 or 15 weeks. It can be taken through pregnancy, but the risk is significantly over after 14 weeks, so it’s not really necessary.

Early miscarriages are usually caused by a problem in the baby’s body. Mom’s body terminates the pregnancy because the body can tell something’s wrong. Later miscarriages are usually due to hormonal issues, like not enough progesterone. After 20 weeks miscarriage is often due to genetic causes. Some people seen by Vickie and Camille, have threatened miscarriage, and they’ve been put on bed-rest, but some of the babies have been born with life threatening conditions. Our bodies have high cellular intelligence and know when the current situation should not continue. We need to trust that.

Recurring miscarriages at 8-12 weeks are usually hormone related. This varies woman to woman. FemEase usually takes care of this problem. The extra progesterone is what causes morning sickness and dies down after 12 weeks.

In the case of miscarriage at 6 weeks, more than likely, something was going on with the baby. Statistically speaking 1 in 4 babies are miscarried, and many of these are without the mother even knowing. If the problem is hormonal, than these supplements will greatly increase your chances for a next successful pregnancy.

Take heart and know that your body can often function normally when given the correct nutrition, so you are on the right path! Keep on going!

  10. just a mom says:

I am in the process of making the desicion to have a D&C done or just let it come out naturally. This is my second miscarriage and was just wondering if taking Fem Ease and primose oil will help with this process of miscarriage? Any suggestions?

    • I’m so sorry to hear it. Most OBGYNs don’t like to do a D&C unless it’s been in for a couple weeks or there are problems. There are some good herbal tools that can help complete a miscarriage. One of my herbal resources (Wise Woman Herbal For the Childbearing Year) says to complete a miscarriage you should 1) have an experienced assistant help you, 2) have herbs on hand which help support healthy blood balance-like shepherd’s purse, 3) use 20 drops each of Blue and Black Cohosh tinctures every hour to empty the uterus. Do not exceed 5 doses.

I would have some lobelia tincture to have on hand in case of minor pain. I take 6 drops orally every 15 minutes as needed or rub into tummy or lower back. If you don’t have a midwife or someone with skill, at least have a good friend with you when you do this and have someone you can call in case of emergency. If you get these tools, they usually work very well. You may still want to wait and see how well the body does up to a week and a half, but after that you risk problems developing.

The FemEase and primrose oil should help get repair work and healing underway along with getting your hormones rebalanced. I just posted an extensive commentary about reasons for miscarriage that may be of interest to you in a previous comment (in case you didn’t see it), but just remember that it’s part of life and happens more than we realize. Don’t feel too bad or scared.
God bless you and good luck!

  11. rachel says:

hi I stumbled over ur article and found it to be very interesting. well I recently found out I was pregnant for the third time you would think it would be exciting but its more on the depressing side. ive had two previous miscarriages due to uterine fibroids. my doc previously said not to worry cuz third time should be a charm I wanted to punch him in the face like losing a child is ok. I have a new doc thats been running test to figure out my whole fibroid deal but I was suppose to prevent getting pregnant im so sad and scared that this pregnancy will end up a dissappointment. ima relay this site to my doc wish me luck!

disappointment ima relay ur website to my doc wish me lu,k!

    disappointment. in

  12. Adrienne says:

Hi! I just stumbled upon your website and it has so much information! I was wondering, I am currently pregnant with number 4, and have had three miscarriages in the past (not one after another). At 36 years old, would the femease help with minimizing the risk of miscarriage? I am currently around 6 weeks along. I just got a positive pregnancy test and my husband and I want to be excited, but with our history, we don’t start getting excited until around week 9 or so, I’ve never miscarried beyond that point. so, would the femease be safe to take right now and would I just stop at the end of the first trimester? Thanks so much for your willingness to give helpful information!

    • Adrienne says:

Sorry, forgot to check off the “notify me” box! :)

    • Jenni @ Mom Essentials says:

Yes, FemEase was originally formulated to prepare for and support healthy pregnancies and has worked over and over again for my midwife’s clients. I would take it along with Evening Primrose oil for best results, and you want to continue taking it 15-20 weeks.

  13. JS says:

    Hi Jenni/Emili,

I am in the process of trying to conceive (Perhaps could be pregnant now and I’m yet to confirm with the pregnancy test in a week’s time) and have two fibroids on the walls on my uterus, one 4 cm and the other 2 cm. I would really appreciate if you could confirm that its okay to take Vickie’s fibroid pack (FemEase, Bottles Pau ‘d Arco and Evening Primrose Capsules) while trying to conceive and up till what point in Pregnancy. Once discontinued at some point in pregnancy, when should I start taking them again? By the way, I also would like to know how long does the whole pack last and how long it would probably take to see my fibroid’s shrinking. Hope this wouldn’t interfere with other prenatal and vitamin supplements that I’m taking (Currently I’m drinking Red Raspberry leaf tea too). Please advise.

    Thanks much,
