How to Have a Healthy Halloween

I confess, I love some things about Halloween, especially since I’ve figured out how to keep it healthy for our family.

Family Halloween 2011 300x200 How to Have a Healthy Halloween

As we were preparing for our fun evening, I thought I’d share with you how I’ve done this.

The few days after Halloween I stop at local stores to pick up lots of discounted fun stuff.

I hand this stuff out the next year, things such as rings, stickers, fake teeth, erasers, etc. (Why not when it’s 75% off???)

I keep a few semi-healthy treat items to “trade” with my kids for their candy like, YummyEarth’s How to Have a Healthy Halloween evaporated cane juice lollipops or hard candies. As long as I tell them ahead of time that we’re only going to have a little and get some trades from mom, they are pretty okay with it.

My husband and I prefer a bit of dark chocolate for ourselves.

We make yummy pumpkin cookies each year (I’ll try to post recipe soon), which I hand out to the parents at our neighborhood trunk or treat. It’s becoming a tradition. I use whole white wheat flour and Evaporated Cane Juice sugar How to Have a Healthy Halloween in my cookies, along with a few dark chocolate chips…mmmm!

We have a big bin full of costumes from yard sales, that the kids love to pull stuff from. I encourage my kids not to dabble too much in the scary and dark side of this holiday. We generally like to keep things on the lighter side (and have less nightmares as a result). Although, I admit we like to watch Disney’s “Legend of Sleepy Hollow” as a tradition.

Here’s a fun Jibjab video I made of the kids last year. They love to watch it over and over.

This year we learned that our dentist is paying $1 per pound of candy to the child and $1 to the child’s school when they bring it into the office. So that’s what we’re going to do. I could have done this before, myself.

Here’s a video we did today on having a healthy Halloween.

I don’t feel guilty at all for helping my family enjoy this holiday without the traditional amount of white sugar treats. We don’t have big emotional swings the next day, we feel good and stay healthy. And after so many kids I’ve really been able to tell a difference. It’s nice and I’m completely satisfied doing it this way.

  1. I know I can do better that this (especially thanks to your great ideas), but what we’ve done so far is I’ve asked them “Would you rather go trick-or-treating or ….” and I make it good enough that they choose the latter.

This year we went out to eat for dinner, they picked one item from the Dollar Store, and got a Wendy’s frosty on the way home.

I figure one night of bad food and sugar is better than the whole week.

  2. These are some wonderful ideas! Thanks for sharing. I posted something similar on my health and recipes blog; we definitely believe in the same things.

With my kids (7, 5 & 3yrs) I say “Hey! Let’s figure out how to make your candy last ALL THE WAY TIL CHRISTMAS!!” (You have to make it sound really exciting). Then we count their candy and do a little math ….it usually ends up being only 2 pieces per day. I’m totally cool with 2 a day.

    • Jenni @ Mom Essentials says:

Yes, that’s an idea. Keep in mind, however, that half the body’s white blood cells (for immunity) are paralyzed for 24 hours after eating white sugar. So this could definitely lower your kid’s immunity over the holidays.

100% healthy in our home… we don’t celebrate Halloween!

I love jib jab videos! some great ideas here–although I wonder if the plastic teeth and toys made n China are REALLY healthier? I get it from a mom perspective that anything is better than refined sugar, HFCS and food dye but what’s in those teeth that we DON’T know about? great post got me thinking!

My experience has been that MOST of the time, the teeth are just a novelty. They try them, but don’t keep them in for too long. They usually tire of them fairly quickly. I’m glad I’ve got you thinking though! Thanks for reading!

  10. There are some great tips for a less sugary Hallowe’en in your post. It looks like you and your kids definitely had fun!

  11. I wasn’t able to hit the after Halloween discounts, but wish I had. I think a lot of parents appreciate the non-food items more than the candy for their kids.
This year I handed out goody bags with my Boogie Wipes samples. Each bag also contained a coloring page and 2 crayons and coupons. Well….I did put a Dum Dum pop in each bag as well.

  12. Margaux says:

Thanks for sharing. This is really some great stuff I need to remember as my toddler grows up. Lots of fun ideas to keep it healthy without being “boring.” :) Glad you linked up to Snacktime Saturday.
