Fruit Drink: Power Nutrition In A Cup

We have “fruit drink” at our house everyday at 3 PM.

Fruit drink in cups2 300x200 Fruit Drink: Power Nutrition In A Cup

It serves as an afternoon snack for our family. It’s so nutritionally power-packed that I don’t have to worry about whether my kids eat their dinner veggies or not.
Raw, uncooked foods provide our bodies with live energy and enzymes, which help everything to work better. And this is the most convenient way I’ve found to make it happen.

Joel drink 200x300 Fruit Drink: Power Nutrition In A Cup

Creating fruit drink only takes about 15 minutes from start to finish.

Start with water or juice. I’ve even used rice milk on occasion.

Blender with water 200x300 Fruit Drink: Power Nutrition In A Cup

Add a cup of yogurt. This is optional if you’re avoiding dairy. We actually use goat yogurt made by our friends.

Nathan Pouring Yogurt 300x200 Fruit Drink: Power Nutrition In A Cup

Add 2 cups of dark greens, either spinach, chard or kale.

Nathan adding chard 300x200 Fruit Drink: Power Nutrition In A Cup

Kale is most power-packed nutritionally and is good for cancer prevention, but it can be a bit heavy.

Kale in blender 300x200 Fruit Drink: Power Nutrition In A Cup

If you’re just starting, use spinach first in small amounts and then increase quantity or variety as your family adjusts to having “fruit drink.” Don’t worry! We balance it out so the kids hardly know it’s there.

Add 1-2 bananas, which add natural sweetness and smooth texture.

Bananas in blender 220x300 Fruit Drink: Power Nutrition In A Cup

Then add one half pear or apple (or a whole for our size family).

Pears in blender 300x200 Fruit Drink: Power Nutrition In A Cup

I throw in whatever extra fruit is laying around needing to be eaten. In the summer I buy peaches in bulk and freeze them, so we sometimes use those as well. It’s a good idea to keep frozen ripe bananas in the freezer for days when you don’t have any ripe ones.

Nathan fruit 300x200 Fruit Drink: Power Nutrition In A Cup

Then you need to have some kind of berries to give it good flavor and color. We use 1-2 cups of frozen blueberries or strawberries usually. If they aren’t frozen, then add a cup of ice.

Top it off with a dash of pure stevia extract if you have some. This gives it extra sweetness to hide the green, or if your kids don’t care, go without it.

We use a Blendtec with a pitcher that holds 3 quarts and can  handle this amount like a pro. Vitamix is another good brand that holds 8 cups at a time.

If you just have a regular blender, it won’t be as smooth.  Blend until no chunks remain. Adding some flax oil is a great way to get some omegas in too. I even put this in my babies’ bottle, when they’re old enough, of course (I’d say, at least over 8 months).

IMG 1128 200x300 Fruit Drink: Power Nutrition In A Cup

Here’s the basic recipe:

Power Fruit Drink

  • 1-2 cups water or apple juice
  • 1 cup yogurt (optional)
  • 2 cups packed greens, stems removed (spinach, chard or kale)
  • 1-2 bananas, ripe
  • 1/2-1 pear or apple, or other fruit
  • 1-2 cups frozen berries
  • ice as needed
  • 1/8 tsp pure stevia extract
  • 1/2 TB flax oil (optional)

Blend until smooth. Make sure the lid is on tight or you might get this.

Have you heard of the Green Smoothie Girl? She has a website all about green smoothies and whole food nutrition. I bought and love her book “Green Smoothies Diet” and her children’s picture book “The Adventures of Junk Food Dude.” My kids adore this book and it’s a great tool for teaching good nutrition through an engaging story.

As you increase the amount of raw, whole foods you and your family eat, you will have more energy and your family will be healthier and happier.

I’ve been on a smoothie kick in the past few weeks. I skip the water and yogurt part (although I do have some goat milk yogurt I could be using) and just use fruits and veggies.

    I typically have…
    1/2 pineapple
    2 apples
    1 banana
    1 mango
    2 cups spinach
    in each smoothie.

At one point or another, I’ve put in…
    cucumber
    papaya
    berries
    cantaloupe
    kiwi
    oranges
    melons
    grapes
    carrots
…yeah, just about anything goes. :)

    • Jenni @ Mom Essentials says:

      Cool, Leah. Thanks!

    • Jenni @ Mom Essentials says:

Your comment about cucumbers makes me recall that I’ve even put zucchini and avocado in my drinks before. I just have to do it while the kids aren’t looking :)

      • Leah Spencer says:

Mmm, avocado. Yeah, anything pretty much goes. The only thing I haven’t considered is tomatoes because their acidity causes me stomach distress. Maybe I should just go for it with a bottle of DigestZen on hand. ;)

        • Jenni @ Mom Essentials says:

I feel the same about tomatoes. I probably wouldn’t try it. There’s enough other great combinations and possibilities to keep us busy!

  2. Alysia says:

When do you like to start introducing this kind of thing to your babies? I am interested in your timeline for introducing solids and what you like to use for first foods. Thanks for sharing!

    • Jenni @ Mom Essentials says:

I knew someone would ask this, and I was trying to remember what I’ve done in the past. If you use cow milk, it’s wise to wait until baby is a year old. Goat milk is a little easier to digest and I’ve supplemented a few of my babies before the year mark, but this is a very personal decision. We usually start with a bit of rice cereal at 7 months or so, then some mashed banana or avocado. I add well-mashed or blended fruits and cooked vegetables. A baby food grinder is a good investment at this point, although with my last, I fed him whatever I was eating, pre-chewed. Ooops, did I really just let that slip? I guess the more kids you have…

I’ll try to keep better track of what I do with Ian and do a post on it in the future. Thanks for your interest, Alysia!

  3. Tracy Young says:

Hi Jenni! LOVE that you posted this recipe! I don’t usually comment, but I check in at your site often. We’ve been homeschooling part time the last few years and are going to homeschool full-time starting this year.

Thanks for all you post! And especially for getting me started on healthy eating and nutrition, as well as educating at home. Where we are now is a result of what we started back in 2003. Wow! can you believe it’s been that long???

Love and hugs to you and your family!

    Tracy

    • Jenni @ Mom Essentials says:

Thank you so much for commenting here Tracy! I either forgot or didn’t realize you read my blog. How wonderful you are homeschooling! I’m so glad some good philosophies that rubbed off, (what, 8 years ago???) are making a positive difference in your life. Hearing friends and readers tell me this is what keeps me writing regularly.

So glad to hear from you. I’ll look you up next time we come visiting to SoCal.

      Jenni XOXO

    My Fav is:

I’m about to start doing them here in Australia- I’m an ex disillusioned teacher!! I love making these for nieces and nephews- both my kids are fans too!

  11. Another great way to hide the greens is to make it mint flavored, with LOTS of fresh mint leaves. That way the green color just looks right and helps it taste right.

I have a cheapo blender, and so the way I make sure the greens are fully obliterated is put them in FIRST, with the yogurt, buttermilk, coconut milk, whatever I am using. If it does not get smooth with yogurt you can add a little water. But, if I put the fruits and THEN the greens I have little chunkies. Yuck.

Thanks for linking up to Healthy 2day Wednesaday. Hope to see you back next Wednesday.

  17. What a great way to get your kids to eat their veggies! I love how flexible the recipe is; the flavour combinations are endless!

  18. Thank you for another wonderful idea, Jenni! I would love to try this. I’m debating whether or not to get a Blendtec or Vitamix. They’re kind-of expensive (right?) but I think one would also help me with blending my homemade applesauce, since I don’t like as much when it’s chunky and my food processor doesn’t quite do it :) Thank you for linking up at Thrifty Thursday, we hope to see you again this week!

Hi Jenn! I have used both blenders and they are expensive but a worthy investment. I prefer the Blendtec because it pulls the food down by itself with out me having to use a tamper. I bought the big size pitcher and love it!
