Stepping Up When Mom’s Down

Posted in English,Home Educating

A nasty virus has been going around our community and made it into our home. It passed from child to child, starting with a fever and fatigue, and ending with a pale face and cough. I got a sore throat, but no fever, so I thought I was doing fairly well.

Then a few days later, I experienced severe muscle pain in legs and hips, and a splitting headache. For a few days my emotions and energy levels were up and down. One minute I was feeling good and doing things, the next, I was crying or crashing in bed. It didn’t help that Mike was working a long string of nights.

  • Prince or Princess? Plan Your Baby Program - I've known for a while that it's possible to choose the gender of a baby. I charted my own cycles for a time because I didn't want to use birth control, and the book I used mentioned it. Alicia's product outlines how to do it in easy steps. It's 94.8% successful, which is very good odds. It works. It just takes effort, know-how and good planning. If you're willing to do it, then this is a great program to follow.

  • 12 Steps to Whole Foods Course - My friend, Robyn Openshaw, aka Green Smoothie Girl, has an excellent course for becoming knowledgeable at using whole foods in the kitchen.  So if you're trying to get off a junk food diet, or need more ideas for healthy food preparation and lifestyle, I definitely recommend this.

Memorization For Inspiration

My cousin, Lisa, emailed me asking for a poem. This is what she said,

“You are such an inspiring mom to me.  I am looking for a little inspiration one more time! This year, I am trying to choose a poem that my whole family can memorize and use to inspire them to continue to reach onward and upward!  I have several that are too long for my littles. Last year we chose the trite but VERY effective poem “Stick To The Task.”

A Revolutionary Project

My son Nathan has been taking guitar lessons for a year and a half now. He’s getting very good. I bought him a used electric guitar at a yard sale. He loves it, and plays all the time.

A month ago he found a music catalog and spent hours learning about different kinds of guitars, and dreaming about having a better instrument. The catalog has gotten really worn.

The Power of Stories

This is a guest post written by my dear friend and inspiration, Amanda Walker.

Individuals, families and whole communities are connected through stories. These stories can make an average person courageous, a worried man hopeful and a broken human find healing.  When a person has a reservoir of great stories they can draw on them when they need encouragement.  Shared stories strengthen and define a community by creating a common language among them.

Take for example the story of The Little Red Hen.  We all probably remember how the story unfolds.  The Hen asks for help with planting, harvesting and eventually baking the bread.  We learned the moral that “you reap what you sow” as well as “if you help with the work you can enjoy the reward”.

The New Commonwealth Schools

Once children reach pre-teen age, their need to be separate from parents intensifies dramatically. They begin to develop their own identity more fully. They can be very susceptible to peer pressure and may mold their behavior around whatever standards make them acceptable to their classmates. This is manifested even at elementary school age.

How I Teach & Inspire My Kids Through Music

If there were a way to build your children’s characters, touch their souls, inspire them to make wise choices, give them confidence, teach them to think mathematically, help them learn valuable information, and increase the bonds in your relationships, wouldn’t this be worth an investment in time, effort and a little money?

It’s possible to do all these things through the medium of music. I know because I’ve done it, and I’m going to share some of my tips on successful use of the power of music in our families and homes.

Music is a great way to teach children values and academics. From birth to grade 5 they love repetition, and are hungry sponges memorizing and soaking up all to which they are exposed. After grade 5, they tire of repetition more quickly, but they still absorb the examples and messages in their environment. I have tried to maximize this consideration by choosing fun music which teaches facts, ideas, principles and values I want my children to learn.

Increase Your Child’s Recall

Did you know that smelling peppermint could increase recall by 28%? That’s significant, especially if we could harness that power when our kids really need it, like during tests or recitals.*

I pulled out my peppermint when I was writing the thesis for my master herbalist program. It cleared my mind and helped me focus better.

You can just open the bottle and smell it, or you can put 3 drops in a little water in a diffuser like this. Read more…

Teaching Kids Through Travel: Our Trips to Bolivia

From the time our children were born, we’ve talked about exposing them to other cultures and by so doing, widening their vision of the world. We also wanted our children to understand the bounty that we enjoy in America and to internalize the importance of service. I’ve come to realize that children will learn these values if the parents exemplify them and are passionate about them.

Walking the Freedom Trail

History was never my favorite subject in school. Part of the reason is the way it was taught to me, by professors, out of textbooks – boring! It made me think that history was just a bunch of dates, names and facts that had no practical relevance to me. I couldn’t have cared less.

After reading A Thomas Jefferson Education, I think about “learning” differently, and I see history through new eyes. I have more of a desire to know WHY things happened and pass that desire on to my children. For this reason, I jumped at the opportunity to accompany Mike to his continuing medical education conference in Boston with our older kids. It was a chance to make history come alive for us.
