Are You On Guard Against Colds & Sickness?

Hey! This is Jenni’s sister, Emili.  Jenni and I aren’t big believers in getting a flu shot.  You can read more about her opinion on that here.  But we both believe in doing all we can to prevent sickness and working with the tools we have.  I would like to tell you about a popular tool we use in our family, doTERRA’s OnGuard essential oil blend.

A few months ago I was in a meeting with Dr. Hill, one of the main developers and researchers on the doTERRA team, and he was explaining a study they had just completed at the University of Oklahoma.  It’s in the process of being published, but I’ve learned that it takes a long time to get through that process.  I’ll put a link to it once it does though.  For now I’ll just summarize.

We are exposed to viruses and microorganisms all the time in our daily lives.  Our immune system is working every day to defending against the microorganisms we come in contact with.  When something extreme happens in our body to upset our homeostasis, i.e. we don’t get enough sleep, toxic overload, too much white sugar, extreme stress, traveling for the holidays, finishing finals, etc, our immune system is weakened and our bodies allow a virus to attach onto a cell.

The virus then injects the virus DNA into that cell and the newly infected cell begins to duplicate.  Fast.  It creates thousands of “copy” virus cells, and as a result we get sick.  Our body then has to work overtime to kill and clear out all the infected cells.  How does the body clear them out?  Some leave through our digestive system, but many are pulled out in mucous from our nose and throat.  It’s an unpleasant process most of us have experienced.

So, how can essential oils help? First, let’s talk about the study done by the University of Oklahoma.  They showed that the oil “OnGuard” was 90% effective against stopping an infected virus cell from duplicating.  In other words, if you start treating a virus with OnGuard as soon as you start to feel it coming on, you will slow or prevent the duplication of the viral cell.  Fewer viral cells mean that either you don’t get sick (that’s optimal) or your body makes way fewer copies of the virus cell, thus making it easier to kill the fewer amount of sick cells and helping you get over the sickness quickly.

It’s important to note here that there is a window.  If you catch it early (before your body makes tons of copy cells) then you’ll prevent the worst.  If you miss the window and your body has already made thousands and thousands of virus cell copies, you’re probably going to go through the 5-10 days of cleaning out the sick cells.  I would personally still use the OnGuard to try and shorten that time, but your body will still have to deal with what has happened.

Here’s how we use OnGuard at my house.  If I feel something coming on, like a scratchy throat or a runny nose, I get in into my body quickly.  OnGuard is safe to take internally.  I personally like to drip one drop straight from the bottle into the back of my throat.  It numbs my throat and I can feel it fighting the infection immediately.  However it is EXTREMELY STRONG.  So be prepared for an overpowering taste!

If you’re not that daring you can put a drop on your finger and put that in your mouth, or put a couple drops in some water and gargle it and then swallow it down.  Other options would be to put some in an empty veggie capsule (I’d use 3-5 drops) and swallow that so that you don’t taste it, or you can rub some oil directly on the bottom of your feet, which is what I do when my little ones come down with something. Jenni likes to  drink 1-2 drops in peppermint tea, or rub OnGuard, diluted, on the front of her neck and behind her ears.

We try to use OnGuard on a regular basis so we catch things early, even when we don’t know they’re coming.  OnGuard is super anti-bacterial.  It’s a blend of Wild Orange, Clove bud, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus and Rosemary which smells like Christmas.  Also available from doTERRA are OnGuard protective throat lozenges, OnGuard hand soap and OnGuard sanitizing wipes.

My kids have actually come down with a bug this past week.  I’ve been using lots of OnGuard and so far I haven’t had as much as a sniffle.  They are moving through it quickly (with a few extra naps – hooray) and only spending a day and a half instead of the usual 3-6, feeling down.  The baby, who is chugging away at her water with lemon essential oil, has a runny nose but no other symptoms.

Hope you’re surviving the sick season!

    Jenni & Emili…
I will definitely look into “On Guard”. I had never heard of this product before, but it sounds like it could be quite helpful. We GET lots & lots of colds In this area. {Were in the Northeast, New Hampshire}. This sounds like a lifesaver!! Thanks

    Hello,

I love your website. I have been using it since I had my daughter in 2010. I was wondering how young you use onguard – my toddler is 20 mo. Also, is it safe to use when I am pregnant or should I put it on her with rubber gloves. Are there essential oils I should be really concerned about during pregnancy.

Also, if you have any other ideas for PREVENTION of colds in toddlers that would be helpful. I purchased everything from your top ten remedies list, but just wondering if there is anything I can do to keep er from getting sick.

    Thank you!

    • Jenni @ Mom Essentials says:

Way to stock up your natural medicine cabinet! Great job, Jessica!

Most generally used essential oils are safe during pregnancy, especially after the first trimester. I used tons of peppermint with a couple pregnancies, but I would not use much, especially during the first trimester. Here’s a list of oils you should avoid in excess during pregnancy: basil, cassia, cedarwood, cinnamon, clary sage, clove, coriander, cypress, fennel, jasmine, melissa, nutmeg, ravensara, rosemary, rosewood and thyme. (I think I need to do a post on this.)

I do use OnGuard (diluted in carrier oil) on my babies and myself during pregnancy. It is recommended for pregnant mommies to rub on feet for Group B Strep or fevers.

The best idea I have for preventing colds in toddlers is to give them “sassy water” to drink every day (along with a healthy diet, of course). My kids drink it daily, and my sister’s kids do too. Here’s the article I wrote about it http://www.momessentials.net/soda-substitute-essential-oil-water/

      Thanks for your comment, Jessica!

      • Jenni @ Mom Essentials says:

Jessica said, “Thank you so much for your help! One more question, do you use elderberry during pregnancy?”

Yes, I do. The alcohol extract has a longer shelf life, but the glycerin based tincture is gentle and tastes good. I just squirt it in all our mouths. I’ve been giving it to my daughter and 8 month-old baby today because they had a little gunk in their sinuses and she had a low fever last night. It helps with that and clearing coughs and other cold symptoms. I give it a few times a day or up to every hour or even 15 minutes for acute symptoms.

I just sent out an elderberry syrup recipe to Mom Essential subscribers, for for those who would like to have that, be sure to opt in for the free flu report!

My husband takes onguard and he takes a ton, an absolute ton of it. And it’s expensive, so can you tell me how much and how many times he should be taking it daily? Thank you so much!

    • Jenni @ Mom Essentials says:

Honestly, it will just help him cleanse and strengthen his immune system. I would say any more than 8 drops, 3 times a day may be more than necessary unless you’re fighting an acute sickness. You may want to get on Doterra’s Loyalty rewards program and get an extra 30% back in free product on your purchases. That’s the most economical way to purchase their oils and get more for your money. :)

  4. Debbie Snider says:

I just learned about doTerra last night and got a sample of On Guard. I have had swollen tonsils with white grossness on one of them for about a week and I’ve been taking grapefruit seed extract to try to help my body heal. I’m trying to avoid an antibiotic because I am nursing a 2 month old baby, and I have had no other symptoms (no sore throat or cold). Anyway, I took an On Guard throat drop last night and drank OJ with a couple of drips of On Guard in it, and rubbed a little on my feet before going to bed. Early this morning I rubbed more on my feet, and on my neck then went back to bed for a couple of hours. When I got up, the white grossness was worse, and I could feel it when I swallowed. I thought the oils were not so great at that point, but a few hours later when I checked, the whit grossness was gone, and now there’s a bit of a hole in my tonsil where the white grossness used to be. I’m sure that means it’s healing, but I’m wondering two things.

    1) Am I overdosing on the oil by not mixing it with the coconut oil? How much is safe?

    2) Does it go through the breast milk and help my baby too?

    • Jenni @ Mom Essentials says:

Several drops of OnGuard is definitely not an overdose. I rarely dilute OnGuard when I’m taking it internally or using it on my fee. It’s very hard to overdose on pure essential oils because they help the body so much. They can be strong and feel uncomfortable sometimes when using them full strength, but the quantity you’re talking about does not harm at all. Sometimes the oils can cleanse the body fast and create symptoms from that, but I consider it to be completely safe. And yes, the oils that you take will help and strengthen your baby’s immune system.
