Fresh Juice: It Does A Body Good

Living food gives me energy. Every so often I get weighed down from eating too much cooked or processed food, and I just need something cleansing, yummy, and easy for my body to assimilate. My answer is juice.

I know there are people that say juice is bad because you’re not getting your fiber. Please don’t get me wrong. I love fiber. I eat it and drink it every day. I blend green fruit drinks every morning. Juicing is a once a week to bi-weekly event. I recommend that you blend some greens often, but when you really want a heavenly energy elixir, try fresh juice.

I get out my Breville Juice Fountain Elite. I went through lots of juicers before I found this gem. It is amazing, but it’s definitely an investment. A worthy investment.

My Recent Letter to Jim Matheson Regarding Healthcare Reform

I just got an email from Jim Matheson and here’s my response.
Jim is my representative for the 2nd District of Utah. I really like the way he communicates with his constituents.

He does public, town meetings with a large number of people over the phone. He asks what our concerns are, and tries to respond to them. He sends out surveys by email and asks for feedback. Read more…

Inspire, Not Require: How I Got Music In My Blood

I mentioned in a recent post that my mom sang professionally. Her name is Sandi Griffiths and she sang on the Lawrence Welk Show for about 12 years.

My mother is on left with red hair.

This had a real impact on our family. We’ve all enjoyed singing our whole lives, although none of us have achieved degrees in music.

After Our Decision to Homeschool

We started interviewing for jobs during Mike’s last year of residency. He set up several interviews in California and Utah. I was a big city girl from LA, and he was a small town boy from Lehi, Utah.

We knew we wanted to be somewhat close to family. Most of the interviews were in places we didn’t want to live, or were too far from family.

The possibility we liked the most was a group in southern Utah.

Top 10 Things to Do When Your Child Might Have the Swine Flu

First off, don’t fear. This illness spreads fast, but it’s not that dangerous, especially when you do a few simple things to stack the deck in your favor.

#1- Get Elderberry. It cuts flu recovery time from 6 days to IMG_11792. Health food stores have it in many varieties since a flu study came out a few years ago. I double the dose of most products for my own family if I suspect flu. I recommend Dr. Christopher’s Elderberry Extract or Vickie’s Flubuster and use 1-2 dropperfuls every hour in a drink. Elderberry prevents the virus from getting into healthy cells. Read more…

Singing: It Brings Me Joy

I love to sing. I sang a lot with my family growing up. My mom sang professionally, but we never took any lessons. I took choir in high school. We sang in our church once in a while. We sang Christmas carols every year to our neighbors and friends. It was a big family tradition for a long time, until everyone left the nest.

In college my church asked me first to lead the music in the main meeting, then to direct a small choir. Our numbers grew when I figured out that treats really had influence, especially for the guys. And of course when the guys came, the girls followed. Anyway, it was a fun and musically educational experience.

After I married, we lived in San Diego while Mike went to medical school. I had enjoyed the choir directing so much that I volunteered and ended up directing a choir for the 6 years we lived there. I also joined a community choir, and finally took some lessons from that talented director, Norm Boaz.

Newly Designed Blog, Coming Up

It’s just hard to do a blog when you have 6 kids. There’s no way around it. But I’m passionate about it, so I’m squeezing in the time.

I’ve been trying to get my blog custom designed, because my current theme has some glitches. I didn’t want to spend money, because I’m not making any, and because sharing is just my passion.

Easy, Natural Birth Control: To Conceive And Not To Conceive

When I married, I took birth control pills. I was naive. I didn’t realize how they altered the natural processes of my body and also produced undesirable side effects.

I stopped taking the pill after a couple years when I wanted to start having children. There were 3 years between our 2nd & 3rd children when I couldn’t get pregnant, though we were trying. So I haven’t need much for prevention until this year.

My last baby, Joel, was born in May of 2008. It was a difficult delivery. He was my heaviest baby, weighing over 8 pounds (big for me).  I knew I either needed to call it quits after this one, or at least take a break for a while.

I started investigating my options.

I had already gained a significant amount of enlightenment from a book called Taking Charge516DWYWGBDL._SL160_ of Your Fertility. This book taught me exactly how my cycles worked and how to chart them.

I used this method very effectively to get pregnant a few times. I also used it to hold off pregnancy until I was ready again.

At times I was unsure about how fertile I was on certain days, mainly because I wasn’t always faithful with the charting. It was difficult for me to record everything 100%.

Charting involved taking my temperature every morning, first thing, recording it, noticing other things about my body and cycle, and recording them. Then I calculated which days I was fertile, which days I wasn’t, and how many days were in between.

I didn’t mind taking my own measures for prevention, as long as I knew exactly which days it was necessary.

Earlier this year, I came to the point where I knew I couldn’t handle another bundled blessing to the family yet. So I wanted something more reliable and less mentally demanding. I didn’t want to trick my body with chemicals. I didn’t want anything foreign put in my body (some women I know have gotten pregnant with an IUD).

I just wanted to have an easier way to go natural.

I found it. It’s called Lady-Comp Fertility Monitor. It’s definitely more expensive than some methods ($500), but not as much as an IUD.

21jMJItPNeL._SL160_

It’s a small gadget the size of a flat hamburger. I keep it on my nightstand. It’s got a thermometer attached by a cord. Every morning, before I roll out of bed, I take my temperature. If I’m having my period, I push one more button.

It gives me a red light when I’m fertile, a green light when I’m not, and a yellow light for “maybe fertile” days. Even though I forget some days, the longer I use it, the less yellow days I get. I’ve been using it since February of ’09.

It’s great! I love it! I don’t have to worry, sweat or strain my brain about keeping track. It’s been used extensively by women in Europe and Canada. It’s been tested on 20,000 women and been clinically shown to be 99.3% effective. That’s as high or higher than other methods.

Should I decide to get pregnant again, I’ll know exactly when to try. The upgraded version ($200 more), Baby Comp, even helps you pick the sex of your baby. It tells you which days are more likely for boy or for a girl (just investigate sellers).

Technology continues to amaze me. This style of birth control is much easier on the body than unnatural chemicals and hormones.

Why don’t more women know about this? You’ve got me, but now you know.

The more educated we are as women, the less the pharmaceutical industry controls our bodies and purses, and the more freedom and control we enjoy.

Feel the power. Take control of you, or tell someone else about it.

Why We Decided to Homeschool

When my kids were young, the thought of homeschooling never occurred to me. I was public schooled through 12th grade, except for 3 years of elementary in a private Presbyterian school.

When Mike was in medical school, I started having grand dreams of traveling the world doing service. We both wanted to expose our children to other cultures and the rich differences that existed in the world.

During Mike’s residency, I was thinking about signing up my son for an inexpensive preschool program offered at the nearby community center. I had heard that it was really just glorified babysitting for moms who needed a break from their kids. It sounded tempting.

Kid Proof Cushion Covers

Old stool

Cheap Walmart Stool

My cheap Walmart stools haven’t been holding up to the wear and tear of a large family. I bought them a few years ago, and I was glad I bought extras. One by one, their screws wouldn’t stay in anymore, or they would break somehow.

When one bit the dust, we’d get out a new one. Twice, a leg fell off, and the stool fell, gouging a hole in our wood floor. I was ready for a new set, but just didn’t want more cheap stuff. Plus I knew that quality stools can be pricey.

Recently, we noticed our favorite furniture store was going out of business. It was the kind of place that sells real wood, and they stain it the color you want. It’s expensive stuff, but nothing else compares when you need it to endure the rough use from a bunch of kids.

IMG_0020

Sturdy Wood Stool

So I stopped at the store for a look. Not only did they have some handsome, sturdy stools, they also had a dining set that was perfect for our family. It was big enough to hold all our plates AND the food. And it came with 10 chairs and leaves so we could expand it for guests and special occasions. Not only that, everything was HALF OFF.

IMG_0522

Solid Wood Table & Chairs

I knew it was now or never. I picked the colors I wanted and asked them to do some distressing. I knew it wouldn’t be long before my kids had done some distressing of their own on it, but I wanted it all to blend in.

I was breathless when they delivered the furniture. It was gorgeous! Everything fit just right.

But there was a problem. The seat cushions were all light cream. They were beautiful, but I knew they wouldn’t last a day that way. I needed heavy duty protection against stains.

I immediately went to Walmart and bought some thick plastic vinyl to use for a kid-proof covering.

IMG_0495

I had my son, Nathan, unscrew the cushions from the chairs and stools (and reattach them when I finished).

IMG_0083

I vacuumed my workspace, because the plastic attracts hair like crazy (we have 2 dogs, and kids with thick hair, not to mention my husband).

IMG_0087

I cut plastic plenty big enough to cover the cushions,

IMG_0497

wrapped the plastic tight,

IMG_0508

and stapled it to the underneath of each cushion with a Bostitch staple gun.

IMG_0510

Many of the staples didn’t go in all the way, so I had to hammer them. I used a few tacks, also.

IMG_0505

I cut away excess plastic, so it wasn’t so bulky underneath the cushions.

IMG_0513IMG_0512

I am finishing the last 3 cushions this morning, and the covers have been working beautifully.

IMG_0516

Kid-proof, and they look great. Now to cover the table top . . .
